Many In 1569, Ukraine was ruled by the Polish. This period was known as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Many new cities and villages were made and links between Ukrainian regions were extended. New schools spread the ideas of the Renaissance. Many Polish peasants arrived and soon became mixed with the local population. During this time most Ukrainian nobles were converted to Catholicism.
To leave the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth Ukraine signed a treaty of protection with Russia in 1654 known as the Treaty of Pereyaslav. In 1710, Ukrainian Cossack leader Pylyp Orlyk signed a constitution establishing three branches of government and legally underscored the importance of equality and human rights for citizens under Cossack rule, including a guarantee for free elections. Orlyk’s government was made 77 years before United States Constitution.
The far west of Ukraine was controlled of the Austrians, with the rest becoming a part of the Russian Empire after 1795s. Tsarist gradually started ruling central Ukraine. Cossack uprisings went away by the late 18th century, following the destruction of Cossack hosts. Russia, fearing separatism, made strict limits on attempts to increase the Ukrainian language and culture, even stopping its use and study. Many Ukrainians didn't complain and accepted their fate and led a successful life. The fate of the people under the Austrian Empire rule was far different. They found themselves in the pawn position of the Russian-Austrian fight for the land Central and Southern Europe. At the beginning of World War I, the people supporting Russia were taken by Austrian forces and held in a concentration camp at Talerhof where lots died.
